Influenza (flu) Vaccinations

We offer influenza vaccines daily at the pharmacy. There is no need to call ahead, as I will be able to get you vaccinated within a reasonable amount of time. Vaccination is a free service offered by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Delaware Pharmacy is an accredited vaccination pharmacy, and I am an accredited vaccination pharmacist.

Influenza (Flu) Vaccination

We perform influenza vaccinations on a drop-in basis for adults and children aged five and over.

This year, the vaccination offered for adults is a trivalent inactivated vaccine, Fluviral. This means that the vaccine has three strains of inactivated virus in it. The three strains are:

                                                                                15μg HA - A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
                                                                                15μg HA - A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2)-like virus
                                                                                15μg HA - B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus

The vaccine offered for children aged five to seventeen years old is Fluzone. It is a quadrivalent inactivated vaccine, meaning that it has four strains of inactivated virus in it. The four strains are:

                                                                                15μg HA - A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
                                                                                15μg HA - A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2)-like virus
                                                                                15μg HA - B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus

                                                                                15μg HB - B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus

The intranasal vaccine offered for children aged five through seventeen years old is FluMist. It is a quadrivalent live attenuated influenza vaccine and contains the following strains:

                                                                                15μg HA - A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
                                                                                15μg HA - A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2)-like virus
                                                                                15μg HA - B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus
                                                                                15μg HB - B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus

Vaccines and Your Rights

We understand the issues surrounding individuals' rights to consent or not consent to vaccination. We understand and respect that there are many opinions about vaccination. If you are opposed to vaccination, we suggest that you gather as much information as possible about both sides of the vaccination argument, and evaluate the quality of the articles you find.

As a general thought about vaccination, I would like you to briefly consider the story of many of Canada's immigrants after World War Two. To them, the thought of vaccinations, routinely and publicly funded, was a dream. After seeing so much disease and suffering in Europe, including the loss of limbs from polio, immigrants were extremely pleased to be vaccinated, and had no complaints about lining up to receive them. I do not want you to use just this information to convince you to change your position on vaccination, but I do want you to use this thought to put some of the vaccination arguments in context.
